It was recently announced that the delivery of Panama’s new Amador Convention Center, the largest of its kind in Central America, has been extended until September 30, 2019.
Earlier this year, the consortium in charge of the facility’s construction (CCA-COGIGE) revealed that the structure presented a number of technical imperfections that called for a significant delay in its delivery. As of last March, the construction’s progress was estimated at 87%.
A team of experts of the Panama Tourism Authority (ATP) and the National Tourism Council (CNT) thoroughly inspected the works –their findings prompting the CNT to issue an extraordinary extension of the delivery date to the end of the third quarter of 2019.
The National Tourism Council also approved a $12-million price adjustment to cover both a salary raise for the workforce (as was agreed last year between the national government and Panama’s main labor guild, SUNTRACS) and increases in construction material costs, calculated to date.
It is important to underline that the payment of said adjustment will be effective when the builder successfully turns over the facility (a turnkey project) to the Panama Tourism Authority, in accordance with the quality standards approved in CCA’s blueprints. In addition, the corresponding security bond has been extended until January of 2020, backed by a local insurance company.
Located in Amador, one of Panama City’s most important tourist clusters (due to its strategic location at the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal), the new convention center covers an area of 30,000 square meters and will have a capacity for 25,000 people.
