Exhibit highlights the cultural heritage of the Guna

The mola, the famous reverse-appliqué textile art form of the Guna Native American culture, is being highlighted with the exhibit, “Molas: Layers of Wisdom”, at Panama City’s Inter-Oceanic Canal Museum.

Open until June 30, the exhibit is part of the activities honoring Panama as the 2019 Ibero-American Capital of Culture, a distinction that is intimately related to the celebration of the city’s 500th anniversary this year.

The activity shows the evolution of the art form during the last 69 years (which coincides with the age of the oldest piece of the collection). It is believed the first molas appeared on the scene between 170-150 years ago.

The exhibit is organized by Panama City’s Mayor’s Office, in collaboration with the Bogota Gold Museum, Banco de la República, the Guna General Congress, and the Inter-Oceanic Canal Museum.
